Palm Beach County Votes To Convert Detention Center Into Homeless Shelter

John Prince Park Homeless

Palm Beach County leaders have approved a plan to use an old detention center as a homeless shelter.

The unanimous vote from the County Commission means that more than $8 million will be spent on converting the property near the South Florida Fairgrounds into a shelter for the more than one hundred people living in tents at John Prince Park.

The facility can house up to 125 people on an emergency basis, with the goal of finding permanent housing for those staying there.

In the meantime, CareerSource Palm Beach County will propose awarding $300,000 in funding for expanded services to the homeless and ex-offenders throughout the county.

The money would go to The Lord's Place, which serves the local homeless community.
