Phone Scam Pops Up in Sarasota

SARASOTA -- Sarasota police say phone scammers are posing as officers to con people out of their money.

The caller claims to be a representative of the department asking for donations. The call also claims they have a warrant for the answerer's arrest.

Another version of the scam involves asking people to pay off red light tickets in Bitcoin.

Sarasota police say these calls generally originate out of the country and use the internet (VOIP) to appear as though the call was originating in area code 941. They're notoriously hard to track down.

Police remind us that they never ask for this kind of information. If you get such a call and you live in Sarasota, call SPD at (941) 263-6773.
