MSD Public Safety Commission Says Mental Health Reporting System Is Broken

The Parkland Public Safety Commission wraps up its meeting in Orlando today with a focus on recommendations for mental health tweaks when a student is flagged. The system is broken and must be fixed-that's the word from Chairman, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, who wants the courts to be empowered to involuntarily commit kids. He says the Department of Children and Families also needs to be held more accountable to report when a child is Baker Acted like in the case of Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz. He was Baker Acted 35 times before the massacre, but no one knew. The recommendations will be written in the commission's second report to be presented to the governor and legislature next year.
