Search on for a Missing Manatee

TREASURE ISLAND -- State fish and wildlife researchers are keeping an eye on a manatee that may have been injured by a watercraft.

Calls came in to the Wildlife Alert hotline after the manatee was spotted on the Intracoastal Waterway Sunday. Kelly Richmond with the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute says they caught up with it near Treasure Island that evening. Richmond says the manatee appeared to be breathing and they decided to check back on it the next day.

They went out to look for it Monday morning but couldn't find the manatee. Watercraft accidents cause 25 percent or more of manatee deaths in Florida, according to the state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
