Since its inception, Hip-Hop has influenced the political spectrum from N.W.A.'s stance on police brutality to 2 Live Crew's fight for freedom of speech. Five decades later, the genre's powerful impact on U.S. politics will be put under a microscope.
On Tuesday, April 16, ESPN and Disney's Andscape debuted the trailer for their new special Hip-Hop and The White House. The documentary will break down how Hip-Hop broke the mold of the U.S.'s long-standing offensive policies and encouraged change to benefit Black and Brown people all over the country. The Jesse Washington-directed film will feature appearances from politicians like Representative Maxine Waters and artists like Jeezy — who also an executive producer.
“2Pac, N.W.A and those guys connected me because it was in the language I speak,” the Georgia native says in the trailer. “This is the story about how hip-hop got the power.”
In addition to Rep. Waters and Jeezy, the documentary will also feature commentary from Common, KRS-One, Roxanne Shante, YG, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Mick Jenkins, Curren$y, Bun B, Waka Flocka Flame, Chika, Grandmaster Caz, Mayor Ras Baraka and more. Common speaks on moments in history where Hip-Hop and The White House collided like Kanye West's notorious statement about President George Bush in 2004.
