Miami Seaquarium's Famed Orca Lolita To Be Freed

After more than 50 years in captivity, an orca at Miami Seaquarium is returning home. Officials announced that Lolita will be released into her native waters in the Pacific Northwest. She's 57-years-old, and one activist who has called for her release says she has suffered a lot.

Details of the move are expected soon.

The news comes on the heels of disturbing news earlier this month, following the passing of another killer whale in captivity in Canada. After living in captivity for over half a century, the day may be almost here for the whale, also known as Toki, to return home. The 56-year-old orca stopped performing last year but still remains in her 80-foot long and 35-foot wide tank at Miami Seaquarium. Calls for her return to native waters in the Pacific Northwest have only intensified.

An announcement on the efforts to free Toki is scheduled for Thursday.
