TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Hillsborough County deputies say a Crime Stoppers tip resulted in serial bank robbery arrest.
Deputies say investigators recently got a tip 29-year-old Matthew Donald Maxwell may be the suspect in the case of several central Florida bank robberies between November 2013 and June 2014.
Officials say the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office was able to have two witnesses from a November 2013 robbery positively identify Maxwell via a photo line-up. Sarasota County detectives then obtained an arrest warrant for Maxwell on July 28, 2014 for bank robbery, according to deputies, and he was then found on vacation in Atlanta, Georgia and taken into custody.
After his arrest, deputies say they obtained a search warrant for Maxwell's Sulphur Springs home where investigators found a large sum of money in a secret compartment within the residence, along with several other items of evidentiary value.
Investigators interviewed Maxwell, who made a full confession to numerous bank robberies in the area, according to Hillsborough Sheriff’s officials.
Maxwell is being held in Atlanta, Georgia awaiting extradition.
